Off-Grid Solar and Rural Battery Power for Sydney and Regional NSW

Off-grid and rural solar systems in NSW are engineered differently from suburban rooftop solar: there is no grid to fall back on, the loads (bore pumps, cool rooms, workshops, electric fencing) behave nothing like a suburban house, and the system has to be sized against the worst reasonably expected winter month, not a sunny annual average. Do rebates apply to off-grid and battery-only systems?

Yes — with one honest caveat.

Updated August 2026 — for NSW residents. Both the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme) and the NSW PDRS battery incentive apply to off-grid and battery-only installs. As of 1 July 2026 the NSW incentive no longer requires existing solar to qualify, which matters a great deal if you're building a battery-first or genuinely off-grid system from scratch. The caveat: the extra NSW top-up for joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) needs a live grid connection, so a genuinely off-grid system can't join a VPP and generally can't claim that VPP-linked bonus. The base battery incentive and the federal rebate still apply. Can I claim a battery rebate if I'm fully off-grid?

The federal battery rebate and the base NSW battery incentive apply to off-grid and battery-only systems. The VPP-linked NSW top-up does not, because joining a VPP requires a grid connection.
